Clean Night-Out Skincare with Celebrity Makeup Artist Lisa Aharon

Daytime beauty contrasts with evening beauty. Lighting is different, makeup is bolder, outfits are cooler and the atmosphere is more social and/or intimate at night. It’s only natural that skincare rituals also shift with the dimming sun.

We asked clean beauty-obsessed celebrity makeup artist Lisa Aharon to tell us about her personal night-out ritual. Read on to score a new nontoxic-night-out beauty fave or two:

HB: How do you like to prep for a night out, whether it’s skincare, exercise, a bath, etc.?

LA: Going out for the night is the perfect excuse to exercise self care and indulgence. First, I’ll apply a mask to help with brightness and gentle exfoliating. Nothing that takes too long, maybe 10-15 mins. Joanna Vargas Dawn Sheet Masks are easy and effective. I’ve also been loving the new Prism Exfoliating Glow Facial by Herbivore.

When the mask is done, I like to have a long, hot shower and exfoliate and/or dry brush my body. Herbivore’s Coco Rose Exfoliating Body Polish smells sooo good and leaves my skin super hydrated and glowing. Along with the result of baby soft skin, this ritual helps me clear my head and feel energized.

HB: What does your skincare ritual look like when prepping your complexion and/or body for a dreamy evening out?

LA: I’m very into cocktailing my skincare to fit its ever-changing needs. Since the winter generally leaves my complexion dry and dull, I’ve been misting my face with Herbivore’s Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist constantly. To keep my makeup glowing fresh for a night out, I like to prep and set with it as well!

I’ve also been mixing the Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum with Herbivore Phoenix Facial Oil for a dewy glow under my makeup a lot, lately.

HB: What’s in your evening bag?

LA: I cannot leave the house without lip balm in my purse! Especially if I’ve got a full makeup look on for a night out, I like to keep my lips moisturized and simple. I don’t feel like myself when I’m overdone so I like to leave one thing clean.

Olio E Osso Balm is a good one for dry lips, flyaways or dry elbows. The alternative is wearing a bold lip, rosy cheek and just a little highlight on the lid with mascara.  A multi product like Ilia Multi Stick or Herbivore Coco Rose Lip Tint is perfect for this.

HB: How do you care for your skin at the end of a night out?

LA: Cleansing your skin at the end of the night is so important and something I look forward to after wearing makeup all evening!

If I’m wearing a heavier eye, I’ll use an oil cleanser like Tata Harper Nourishing Oil Cleanser or Living Libations Best Skin Ever. Oil breaks down makeup easily so there’s less pulling and rubbing on the skin. I tend to get lazy late at night, and this lets me skip the eye makeup remover.

Then I apply my moisturizer and eye cream and it’s off to bed.  Moonfruit Superfruit Night Treatment has AHA’s to clarify the skin and the scent of lavender to lull you to sleep.

HB: Do you have any tips for addressing common night-out concerns like shiny skin, caking concealer, etc.)?

LA: Personally I don’t mind a little shine but to keep it under control, I’ll either use a primer under my tinted moisturizer or keep a pressed powder in my bag for touch-ups.

To avoid your foundation or concealer looking cake-y, keep it light and don’t apply it too close to the lash line. Only a little bit of powder under the eye is needed and you can use your finger to gently press it in. I always like to finish with a little mist of something to set the powder into the skin to leave a more natural finish.
