Saving our LGBTQ Youth: Prism + The Trevor Project
The last few years have been difficult for everyone, but it has been especially challenging for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth, who already face hardships such as rejection and discrimination. The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention for LGBTQ young people, has found that in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, they have experienced significant increases in the volume of LGBTQ youth reaching out for crisis counseling.
When our founder Julia Wills first imagined our Prism skincare collection, she was meditating in Seattle’s Volunteer Park, a special place that has long hosted Pride events in summer months. It was there that she envisioned a rainbow of botanicals coming together to create prismatically brilliant results, and decided to dedicate the collection to the LGBTQ community. We have donated to The Trevor Project in years since, and have every intention of continuing to do so.
We are donating $1 for each Prism product sold, including our Prism Exfoliating Glow Facial and Prism Exfoliating Glow Serum, to The Trevor Project with a minimum commitment of $75,000 in 2021 - 2022. All funds donated to The Trevor Project will help provide LGBTQ young people with free, 24/7 crisis counseling.
According to their own research, The Trevor Project found that more than 1.8 million LGBTQ youth in the U.S. seriously consider suicide every year. They work to save young lives by providing support through free and confidential suicide prevention and crisis intervention programs on platforms where young people spend their time: phone, chat, and text. The TrevorLifeline, TrevorChat, and TrevorText are available to LGBTQ young people 24/7.
In addition to these services, the org’s suicide prevention programs include the Trevor Support Center, which provides information to LGBTQ young people and their allies on sexual identity, language terms, coming out, relationships, homelessness, mental health, and much more. Their online community, TrevorSpace, is the world’s largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ youth.
The Trevor Project additionally provides education for teachers via The Lifeguard Workshop, an online learning tool designed for middle and high school educators, and also offers online and in-person training for other adults who work with youth, such as counselors, administrators, school nurses, and social workers, helping to create a vast network of support and awareness.
We will be co-creating live and in-feed content for our Instagram platform and The Trevor Project’s Instagram throughout the year to provide education on the topic of mental health, plus actions we can take to get help, find support, or be an ally. Stay tuned to learn more and participate.
